To get started, think about how people search for information online. For example, a student entrepreneur has an idea and they’re now interested in launching a startup company. What would they do to figure out how to move forward? Probably start searching for resources online by entering specific questions into a search engine like Google. “How to connect with startup investors in Upstate New York?”

According to Amit Singhal, Senior Vice President of Google Search, Google gets over 100 billion searches a month.

To do this they send out “spiders” to crawl through the web in search of that content.

The spider algorithms are designed to figure out what each page published to the Internet is about.

Using this data a list of results are created relevant to each search. These results are then ranked based on the popularity and authority of each website. This ranking is what you see when you look at a search engine results page.

The first few results and the ones on the right-hand side are ads by companies that have paid to appear in specific search results. Immediately below the ads, you’ll see the top one to 10 unpaid or "organic" results that contain the most popular and relevant answers for your search.Because most online users only click on the first few results they see, our goal an inbound marketers is to place websites in the top of organic search results.
